Florence Hunter Monks Ault

Florence Hunter (Monks) Ault passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, December 14, 2016 at her home outside Santa Fe, surrounded by family. Florence was born on May 5, 1928 in New York City to Malcolm and Althea Hunter. She grew up in New York City, attended Chatham Hall in Virginia and then returned to New York City to care for her mother. She graduated from Chapin High School in 1946.  She volunteered for the Gray Ladies, working at the Veterans' hospital in New York until she married Jerome R. A. Monks on September 11, 1948.  They were married for almost 40 years until his death in 1988. They had seven children; Jerome Peter Monks of Ojo Caliente, New Mexico; Caroline Monks Aiken of Denver, Colorado; Barbara Monks Candelario of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Sheila Monks; Alicia Monks Murtha of Corrales, New Mexico; Dermot Owen Monks of Santa Fe; and Colin Robert Florence Monks of Denver, Colorado.
 
Florence found love again later in life and married J. Burchanal "Burch" Ault. They had 15 happy years together, enjoying traveling and their large combined family.  Burch passed away in 2008.
 
Florence was a great lover of dogs, birds and nature, the arts and her community. She was a member of Holy Faith Church for more than 30 years. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and philanthropist. She was beloved by many. She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, her brother, sisters and daughter, Sheila; and is survived by her children Jerome Peter, Caroline, Barbara, Alicia, Dermot Owen and Colin Robert Florence; her grandchildren Stephen Gordon Aiken, Jessica Hills Morlock, Douglas Jerome Aiken, Adrienne Hills Czarniak, Allan Keith Aiken, Bruce Phillip Hills, Bridgette Ann Murtha, Dermot Hayward Monks, Nanette Christine Murtha, Danielle Hunter Monks Nickley, Cathrine Nicole Monks, Maya Florence Monks; and great grandchildren Riley Mathew Morlock, Noah Xavier Morlock, Aidan Stephen Aiken, Gavin Kennet Aiken, Jackson Scott Czarniak, Sage Christine Aiken, Charlotte Grace Czarniak, Dermot Theodore Monks, Adalind Violet Hills, Oliver Richard Monks and Brooklyn Isabella Hills, as well as many nieces, nephews and devoted friends.
 
A Memorial Service will be held at the Church of the Holy Faith, 311 E Palace, Santa Fe, New Mexico on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow immediately thereafter across the street at La Posada.  To honor Florence, the family requests a donation to one of her favorite charities such as St. Jude’s, Doctors without Borders, the Santa Fe Opera, the Arthritis foundation, the ASPCA or the Santa Fe Preparatory School.
