Sabina C de Baca

March 15, 1918 ~ August 19, 2017 (age 99) 99 Years Old

Sabina (Griego Boulton) C’ de Baca, 99, passed away in Rio Rancho, NM on Aug. 19, 2017. She was born to Rita (Solano) and Nicolas Griego on March 15, 1918, in El Puerticito (now known as Sena), NM. As a child, she also spent time in La Mesa, El Coruco, Ribera, Jemez Springs, Bernalillo, and finally Pecos, NM. She graduated from Pecos High School in 1936 and began nurses training that fall at St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe. She earned her Registered Nurse Certificate in May 1939. During World War II, Sabina worked at the Marine Hospital in Galveston, Texas, under the U.S. Public Health Service. She met merchant marine Jack Boulton from Chester, PA and they married May 10, 1941, in Galveston. After 46 years of marriage, Jack passed away in August 1987. They made their home in Santa Fe, where Sabina was employed at St. Vincent Hospital. She was head nurse of labor and delivery for nearly 20 years until she retired in 1980. She also served on the hospital Board of Trustees in 1981. Sabina then continued working part-time doing medical histories for insurance companies. She was fortunate to see many parts of this world, touring most of Southern Spain, Portugal, France, England, Ireland, Italy, and Belgium. She went to the Holy Land twice, to Egypt, sailed the Nile and visited the Pyramids. She fished in Alaska three times and saw the glaciers of Montana and Canada. There are many stories that illustrate her perseverance, mental toughness, compassion and powerful resilience. She lived a long, fulfilled life full of adventure and purpose. With Sabina’s passing, we’ve lost another of America’s greatest generation.
In July 1994, Sabina married Nazario C’ de Baca of Albuquerque, NM. They had originally met in 1937 through his late sister, Melinda Gonzales of La Cienega, who was attending nurses training with Sabina at the time. Sabina and Nazario made their home in Bernalillo, where she had been very active with Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. She was a member of the Blue Army. Sabina and Nazario enjoyed 19 years together before he passed away in July 2013.
Sabina was preceded in death by her parents, 11 of 12 siblings, first husband Jack and second husband Nazario, daughters Alice Irving, Kelly Garrett and Frances Boulton, grandchildren Rita Slack and Kevin Boulton, and son-in-law George Carrion. She is survived by her children Georgia Pearson (Ted), John (Wrenn), Anita Dupree (Jon), Martha, Mary Kay, Rita Wolfe (Gary), and Mary Jo (Carrion) Chavez (Ronnie); 16 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren; and sister Simona Vigil of Calif.
