Roslyn E. Eisenberg died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on January 6, 2018. She was born in New Orleans, LA to Arthur and Minnie (Hellmen) Eisenberg in August of 1934. She was raised in Houston, TX and graduated from Texas State College for Women, in 1955. During spring vacation her senior year she visited Santa Fe and was hired for a summer position as the Girl Scout Camp in Hyde Park. She moved to Santa Fe that summer and never looked back. In the fall of 1955 she was hired as a P.E. teacher in Lordsburg. She returned to her Girl Scout position in the summer of 1956 and wanting to stay in Santa Fe was hired as a teacher at Loretta Academy and St. Francis Cathedral School, the only non-nun on the faculty. In 1957 she was hired as an analytical statistician at the Los Alamos Lab working on the early IBM 704 computer. In 1960 she took a job as a research assistant with the New Mexico Board of Finance where her boss Dr. Donald Mayer recruited her for a newly funded program at Eastern New Mexico University to train teachers in deaf education. In 1964 with a M.S. in hand she was hired at the New Mexico School for the Deaf from which she retired in 1988.
In 1963 Roz and Justine Thomas purchased Villagra Bookstore in Sena Plaza, which they owned until 1975. Along with a deep involvement in community events they met and supported many emerging artists and authors. Tony Hillerman has his first book signing at the store. Roz worked with and became friends with Laura Gilpin, Marjorie Lambert, and Bertha Dutton. She assisted Florence Hawley Ellis in establishing the museum at Ghost Ranch. She also continued to stay active as a Girl Scout leader and served on international Girl Scout staff at “Our Cabana” center in Cuernavaca, Mexico. In 2012 she was named a Santa Fe Living Treasure.
After retirement she began traveling the West, falling in love with Yellowstone and the Tetons, exploring the canyon country of Southern Utah and visiting all the national parks in Utah and Colorado. She camped in the High Uintas, learned to fly fish in Montana, and enjoyed wolf and bird watching in Yellowstone. She enjoyed the Sandhill Cranes in the Bosque del Apache and spent time discovering birds of prey wherever she traveled.
Preceded in death by her parents she is survived by her brother Al and his wife Marilynn; niece Susie Eisenberg-Argo and her family; nephew Curt and his daughter of Houston; nephew Eric and his children of Dallas; Carla Neely and Donna Robertson of Seattle; and her partner of many years Kathryn Brooks of Santa Fe and her family.
The family is grateful for and wishes to thank the physicians, nurses, and staff on second south Christus St. Vincent for their caring and compassion, especially Dr. Comfort Bonu.
A celebration of her life will take place in the spring. Memorial donations may be made in her honor to the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center Birds of Prey P.O. Box 996, West Yellowstone, MT 59758, a center she supported from its beginning in the 1990s.
