Tribute

Michael A Varela, at age 72, passed away in his home on Saturday, January 26, 2019.  He was born July 1, 1946 and preceded in death by his parents Bruno T. and Minnie Koury Varela.  He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years Susan Gomez Varela; son Phillip Varela (Raquel), grandson Colton; He is also survived his brother Jim Varela (Ellen), nephews, Paul and Chris and by Sharon Williard (Clay) and their four children. Michael, also known as MikeyV, will be remembered as a light hearted, fun loving person with a big heart. He obtained a Master’s degree in 1978 from the University of New Mexico and worked towards his professional development at Harvard University. He worked as the Executive Director for the Santa Fe Civic housing where he worked to bring affordable housing to the citizens of Santa Fe. He retired after 28 years of government service. After retirement, he worked for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban development and finally worked alongside his wife and son at Varela Real Estate. He was also recognized as the President and Member of the Year for the Santa Fe Fiesta Council. He served as President of the Santa Fe Country Club, and he was one of the founders of the St. Michael’s High School Foundation. In his later years, what he enjoyed most was spending time with his family in Angel Fire, NM. He made many friends throughout the Santa Fe community and was well loved by the people who knew him. A rosary will be held Friday, February 8, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi (131 Cathedral Place) followed by the mass at 10:00 a.m.  A reception will follow the burial services at the Santa Fe Elks Lodge.

Serving as pallbearers will be Paul Varela and James Clokey.
