Maria A. Barton

Maria A. Barton a lifelong resident of Santa Fe, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2021 at the age of 94. Born on April 19, 1927, Maria was one of ten siblings who obtained her Associate’s Degree at a time when it was rare for a woman to complete high school. She was a pioneer in her career succeeding in an area where women were rarely found in positions other than secretaries. It was in her first job with the Bureau of Land Management that she studied and taught herself Abstracts for Oil and Gas Leases and stood on the steps bidding with experienced men. She was a natural at this and owned and operated her own business. In her free time she loved to travel and see the world. She was a proud founding member of Cristo Rey Credit Union and assisted Father McCarthy in bringing it to fruition.

A lifelong Catholic and parishioner of Cristo Rey Catholic Church, she dedicated herself to her faith serving on the Altar Society for Cristo Rey Church and the Chapel at St. Vincent Hospital. She was a member of the Confriada de la Nuestra Señora de Conquistadora.

Maria was preceded in death by her parents, Abundio and Maria Armijo, siblings: Placida Ortiz, Leocadia Ortiz, Carolina Gonzales, Petronilo Armijo, Frank Armijo, Maida Martinez, Margarita Armijo, Abundio Armijo Jr. And Miquela Smith, along with husbands Richard M. Barton and the love of her life, Felipe Martinez.

She is survived by her beloved sister-in-law Lari Armijo, goddaughter Theresa Armijo, godson David Martinez, and niece Roberta Armijo, as well as many other loving nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to her caretakers, who came to be part of the family, for their loving care, Angela Gomez, Roberta Garcia and Cindy Flores. We would like to also thank the dedicated staff at Genesis Casa Real and roommate Linda.

A visitation and rosary will be held at Berardinelli Funeral Home, 1399 Luisa Street on October 5, 2021 at 6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at Cristo Rey Church, Canyon Road on October 6, 2021 at 10:00 am. Interment at Rosario Cemetery in Santa Fe will follow with a reception to be held at the Elks Lodge immediately following.

Pallbearer is David Martinez. Honorary Pallbearers are Michael Armijo, Albert Gonzales, Jerry Gonzales, Carlos Martinez, Ben Martinez, Roberto Ortiz, Ramon Ortiz, Benny Ortiz, Lendal R. Smith III, Paul Smith and David R. Salazar.
