Marc Barreras

August 28, 1927 ~ January 1, 2022 (age 94)

Tribute

Marc was born in 1927 in San Marcial, New Mexico two years before the Rio Grande River flooded and wiped out the town.  He was the son of Florencia (Mendoza) Barreras and Salvador Barreras but when his mother died of pneumonia at a young age, he and his sister were raised by his grandparents, Aurelia (Baca) Mendoza and Eutimio Mendoza.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and sister, Celia (Barreras) Chavez.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Beth) (Edgar) Barreras, his daughters Cynthia (Cindy) Barreras and Catherine (Barreras) Davis, four grandchildren, his step-daughter Olinda Garcia, his brother-in-law Vernon Edgar and many nieces and nephews.

Marc was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.  He and his first wife, Lucy (Vigil) Barreras had two daughters, Cynthia (Cindy) and Catherine.  He worked for Zia Corp in Los Alamos in the new start-up field called Data Processing (now known as Information Technology).  Marc had a massive stroke in 1975 at the young age of 47 when working as the IT manager for First National Bank of Santa Fe.  Even though he was limited in his speech and movement, he did some amazing things in his life.  After his stroke he married Beth Barreras who took care of him for over 45 years.  Nothing kept Marc down.  He and his wife traveled the world and even lived in southern France for a year when disabled people were not provided much “accommodation.”

Before his stroke Marc loved participating in bowling, basketball, golf and as a fast pitch softball pitcher who often played for charity against Lou Pierotti’s Clowns from Los Alamos.  After his stroke he enjoyed watching most sports.

Marc had a long life of 94 years and passed away very peacefully at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Although fully vaccinated he was a “break-through” case of COVID-19.  Marc wished to be cremated and buried at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.

Special thanks to Ambercare: Dr Thron, Lynn, Miriam, Jerah and others.
