1932-2023

Joe A. Martinez, our loving husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, and lifelong resident of Cerrillos, NM, passed away in his home on August 16, 2023, only 2 days shy of his 91st Birthday.

Joe married the love of his life, Evangeline “Vangie” Ramirez on January 28th, 1961, at St. Joseph’s Church. That was only the beginning of their 62 years of wedded bliss. Together, they raised 3 children, Anthony, Mary, and Joseph.

Joe worked for the New Mexico State Highway Department for 30 years.  When he retired, he started a water hauling business and served the Cerrillos community and surrounding areas.  He always lent a helping hand and was the “go to” guy known by all the locals for water, backhoe work, or any other repair needs.  Joe was a true pillar of the community.  He maintained St. Joseph’s Church and prepared it for Sunday Mass. He was also part of the original group of men who formed the Turquoise Trail Volunteer Fire Department.  He was a cowboy at heart. His ranch was his second home where he would ride horses and raise cattle. He prided himself on taking care of others, his family, and his animals.  

Joe is survived by his wife Vangie, sons Anthony (Jenn) and Joseph, daughter Mary Padilla (Phillip), grandsons Tony (Christianna) and Benny (Jennifer) their mother Melanie, granddaughters, Angelica and Andrea, great-grandchildren, JoRyan, Gianna, Nya and Avery, brother Johnny (Kay), nephews Steven, Johnny (Tara), niece Linda, and many other special nieces and nephews, friends, and relatives.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, brothers, and sister.

A Rosary will be recited on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at 6:30pm at Berardinelli Family Funeral Services located at 1399 Luisa St. Santa Fe, NM.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 25, 2023 at 9:00am at St. Joseph Church, in Cerrillos, NM.
