James Edgar Starr, 80, passed away suddenly on August 31. He is survived by his mother Helen Hawley, daughters Tiffany (Luis) and Stacy (John), grandchildren Roxanne (Roger), Cassandra, Garrett and Dylan, great-grandchildren Markus and Danika, siblings Patty Wilson of Ohio, Daphne Jessup (Larry) and Charles “Buster” Hawley of West Virginia, many nieces/nephews and great nieces/nephews. He was born in Beckley, West Virginia and graduated from Woodrow Wilson HS and was recruited to play sports on an athletic scholarship at Highlands University where he met Elizabeth “Betty” Rimbert and they were married in 1964. From August 1963 to May 1975 he taught at the Santa Fe Public Schools, was an assistant varsity football coach from ’65-’69 and head coach from ’70-’74. In 1975, he was inducted to the Woodrow Wilson Hall of Fame. From 1975-1992 was an elementary school principal for SFPS. In 1975, he implemented the Santa Fe Driving While Under the Influence (DWI) Rehabilitation School and ran the program for the next 18 years. In 1983, he was appointed to serve on the Highlands University Board of Regents, Board of Directors of NM Educational Assistance Foundation from ’83-’88 and Educational Consultant for the NM Firefighters Training Academy. In 2014 he was inducted into the Highlands University Hall of Fame. For the last 20+ years he worked at the NM Human Services Department. A service will be held Thursday, September 7th at 4:00pm at Berardinelli Funeral Home.
