Tribute

Gonzalo J. Varela, age 83 of Pecos, NM passed away on January 22, 2022.

Gonzalo was born on March 5, 1938 to Juan and Trinidad Varela at his home in Pecos.   He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 40 plus years.  He enjoyed working for the forest service as he loved being outdoors in the wilderness and taking care of his ranch.  Loved horseback riding and tending to his horses.  He was a jokester and had many friends who asked about him and always made new friends wherever he went.  He also lived in Ponderosa with his family who took care of him. Dad passed away two months to the date after mom.  May they both rest in peace.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Jody; siblings, Billy, Dolores and Betty;            Helen Roybal (mother of his children) and Charles Bowles.

Gonzalo is survived by his children, Terry (George), Andrew (Debra), David, Michael,         Trina and Grace.  Alen Valencia (Sandra) and Elias Varela (Cathy)                 

Grandchildren: Felicia (Andrew), Andrea (Steve), Vicente (Jocelyn), Jodi (Zach), Jacob (Alicia), Julie, Kyle, Celina, A.J., Shane (Kristen), Isaiah (Lexie), Elijah, Angelica (Mikey), Leandro and Miquela.

Great Grandchildren: Witten, Logan, Jude, Ella Claire, Kai, Lucas,  Elliana, Baby Varela, Jayda, Nazeraya, Arabella, Ava Rose, Trinity, Matthew, Ava Marie, and Josiah; and many special nieces, nephews, friends, and others who loved him.   

He is survived by siblings Lorraine Maley and Eugene Varela.  Holly Varela and many family and friends. 

Pallbearers: Andrew Varela, David Varela, Michael Varela, George Vigil, Shane Benavidez, Leandro Romero and Kenny Martinez.

Honorary Pallbearers: All his grandchildren, great grandchildren and Daryl Quintana.

A Rosary will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 12th with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church, in Pecos, NM.  Interment will take place following the mass at the Pecos Parish Cemetery.  Celebration of Life for dad and mom will be held at a later date.
