Antonio Tanuz

February 26, 1937 ~ February 6, 2021 (age 83) 83 Years Old

Tribute

Antonio (Tony) Tanuz 83, was called to God’s Heavenly Kingdom on February 6, 2021 at his home in Pecos, New Mexico surrounded by his loving family.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Tomas and Dolores G. Tanuz, his sister, Amada Gillum, brothers: Tomas Tanuz, Jr., Manuel Tanuz, and Augustine Cruz. He is survived by his devoted wife, Martha of 46 years, son, Matthew Tanuz, daughter Anna Marie Lujan, and spouse, Joseph Lujan, His beloved grandchildren, Magdalena, Antonio, and Pablo Lujan. His sisters: Dolores (Felix) Sena and Lucille Maestas. His brothers: Bill (Tina) Tanuz, Jimmy (Bernice)Tanuz, Steve (Jeanie)Tanuz. Sister -in -Law Angela Cruz. Special nephew, Lawrence Tanuz. Brothers-in-law: Arthur (Isabell) Varela, Edwin (Deborah) Varela, Alex (Theresa) Varela. Sisters-in-law: Eudelia (Earl) Tarr, Laura Mae Varela, and Bernadette Varela. Also, surviving him are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Raised as a devout Catholic, Tony prayed the Holy Rosary nightly with his family when his illness prevented him from attending Mass and other Church services.

Tony served in the United States Air Force for four years. He earned his Bachelor’s in Business Administration from the College of Santa Fe. Tony was an avid outdoorsman and loved the Pecos Wilderness.  He chose a career in natural resources where he continued to serve his country as a wildland firefighter and was always on call to serve his country during disaster recovery.  Tony led fire crews to wildland fires from coast to coast as well as on special assignments such as hurricane rehabilitation in Puerto Rico until his injury on the Dome Fire of 1996.  Tony was a successful big game hunter and expert fly fisherman.  

Services will be held as follows: Viewing will be at Berardinelli Mortuary in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Friday February 12, 2021 from 2 pm - 6 pm with COVID restrictions. Video Rosary to follow (Oneroomstreaming.com EventID: BerardinelliFS - Password:QEUAHW) Please call the Mortuary for more information. Eulogy will be recited at 10:30 am with a Funeral Mass at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 13, 2021, at St. Anthony’s Church in Pecos, New Mexico. The Burial will follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Pecos, New Mexico. Serving as pallbearers are: Lawrence Tanuz, James Tanuz (God Son), Billy Tanuz, Jr. (God Son) Miguel Varela (God Son), Antonio Lujan, and Matthew Tanuz. Honorary pall bears (God Children): Magdalena Lujan, Jamie Lee Vigil, and Channell Varela. Due to COVID pandemic, funeral services are restricted to immediate family with mask requirements and social distancing. 

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to El Corazon Hospice staff for the compassionate care provided to Tony during his extended illness. Thank you to all those that offered prayers, made telephone calls, sent text messages, brought food to the home, and for all your kindness. Special thanks to James Tanuz and Nash Roybal for praying multiple rosaries throughout his extended illness.
