Jose Lorenzo Mares

Jose Lorenzo Mares (Joe Larry) 92 of Santa Fe passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday March 21, 2024.

He was preceded in death by his parents Escolastica and Liberato Mares, brothers Jose Rubel Mares and Gilbert Mares.

Lorenzo attended school in La Cienega, Menaul School in Albuquerque, El Rito Boarding School. After school he joined the U.S. Army. Upon returning from the Army he worked for the Santa Fe Fire Department where he retired after 23 years. He had many friends and made new ones everywhere he went. He loved to hunt and to share stories of his life adventures. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by Molly Mares, his daughter Janet Rael (Cristobal), grandsons Gabriel Rael (Heather) and Philip Rael (Victoria), and great grandchildren Alexis Rael (German Gutierrez), Damian Rael, Annika Rael, Maya Rael, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Special thanks to Melissa and his neighbors Don, Dolores and Leroy.

A rosary will take place on Tuesday April 2, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. followed by a 10:00 a.m. funeral mass at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 511 Alicia St., Santa Fe, NM.
