Barbara Stone deCastro
July 27, 1932 – February 17, 2017

Barbara Stone deCastro died at home on February 17, 2017, with her family by her side.

The daughter of Virginia Haydon and William Standish Stone¸ Barbara was born on July 27, 1932, in Las Vegas, NM. Beloved mother, grandmother, and wife, she raised three children and was a treasured member of Santa Fe society and business. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Fred Orlando deCastro, and her daughter Victoria deCastro Lewis. Barbara is survived by her son, Frederick Stone deCastro, her daughter Kimberly deCastro, and granddaughters Jenna deCastro and Katherine Evans, her niece Esther Hildebrand, and her grand-niece Selena Hildebrand. She is also survived by a cousin, Osborne Haydon, of Dallas, TX, and her beloved Tahiti family, Toni Richmond Tahiti and Della Sisk.

Barbara was born into a family of pioneers, who arrived in New Mexico in the early 1900’s and helped move it from a Territory into Statehood. A true partner to her husband Fred, she was a businesswoman extraordinaire, the owners of deCastro Jeweler’s, deCastro Real Estate and the Santa Fe institutions Bert’s Burger Bowl and El Toro. Fred fell in love with her steel blue eyes, her wry sense of humor, and her sharp intellect. Barbara in turn fell in love with Fred, especially his cooking. Although not a foodie herself, she loved and kept track of treasured family recipes. They married on February 1, 1952; their romance extended to every part of their lives, to those around them, and lives on even now.

She spent much time in Tahiti to be with her father, who moved to the island for his health. In the family tradition of adventure, Barbara was a pilot in her youth, and left for university at age 16 to Stephens College, in Columbia, MO. After the birth of her children, she spent many summers with them on the beaches of Tahiti and Maui, watching them at play and reading voraciously. Later in life, Barbara was at first a reluctant, then passionate, user of her iPad. She loved her movies, Baba mail, and the forward button. A proficient user of Skype, she enjoyed speaking with her son while he was on his world travels. She loved being in the home that Fred built for her; there was no place she would rather be.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 4th, 10:00am, at Berardinelli Family Funeral Service Chapel. 1399 Luisa St, Santa Fe, NM 87505. Officiating the service is Reverend George V.
